Sizzling Summer Health: Staying Well in July with New Windsor Pediatrics and Family Care!

Hello New Windsor families and friends!

July is here, bringing with it sunshine, longer days, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor fun. As your trusted primary care providers for both pediatrics and adults, we at New Windsor Pediatrics and Family Care want to help you make the most of this beautiful month while keeping health and safety top of mind.

Summer can bring unique health considerations, from active days outdoors to family gatherings. Here are a few friendly reminders to keep everyone in your household happy and healthy this July:

1. Sun Smarts for All Ages: Whether you’re hitting the pool, hiking Storm King, or just playing in the backyard, sun protection is key. Remember to:

  • Slather on the SPF: Use broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, and reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.
  • Seek Shade: Especially during peak sun hours (10 AM – 4 PM).
  • Cover Up: Wide-brimmed hats, sunglasses, and lightweight long-sleeved clothing offer extra protection.

2. Hydration Heroes: With rising temperatures, staying hydrated is crucial for everyone, especially active kids and seniors.

  • Drink Up! Encourage water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Creative Hydration: Incorporate hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumbers, and berries.
  • Limit Sugary Drinks: Sodas and juices can contribute to dehydration.

3. Bug Bites & Beyond: Mosquitoes, ticks, and other summer critters are out and about.

  • Repel Right: Use EPA-registered insect repellents when outdoors, following label instructions carefully, especially for children.
  • Tick Checks: After outdoor activities, thoroughly check yourselves and your children for ticks, paying attention to hair, behind ears, and skin folds. Early removal is vital!
  • Know Your Allergies: If someone in your family has insect sting allergies, ensure their EpiPen is readily accessible.

4. Food Safety for Summer Fun: Barbecues and picnics are a July staple, but food safety is paramount.

  • Keep it Cold, Keep it Hot: Perishable foods should not be left out at room temperature for more than two hours (or one hour if temperatures are above 90°F).
  • Cook Thoroughly: Use a food thermometer to ensure meats are cooked to safe internal temperatures.
  • Wash Up: Always wash hands, utensils, and surfaces thoroughly to prevent cross-contamination.

5. Dive into Water Safety: Whether it’s a pool, lake, or sprinkler, water activities are a summer highlight.

  • Active Supervision: Never leave children unsupervised near water, even for a moment. Designate a “water watcher.”
  • Swim Lessons: Enroll children (and adults!) in swim lessons.
  • Life Jackets: Use U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets for all boating activities.

Looking Ahead: Back-to-School and Sports Physicals! While summer just kicked off, it’s not too early to think about August and September! Beat the rush and schedule your child’s annual check-up and sports physicals now. A routine physical ensures your child is healthy and ready for the upcoming school year and any athletic activities. Early scheduling helps us accommodate your preferred times before the busy season begins!

At New Windsor Pediatrics and Family Care, your family’s health is our year-round priority. From routine check-ups to managing acute illnesses or chronic conditions, we’re here for you. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any health questions or concerns this summer.

Stay safe, stay healthy, and enjoy your July!
