Summer has officially arrived in the Hudson Valley! As the school year wraps up and the temperatures begin to climb, our clinic sees a distinct shift in the types of health needs our patients have. From preparing for long-awaited family vacations to staying safe during our first major heat waves, June is the perfect time to review your family’s summer health plan.
At New Windsor Pediatrics & Family Care, we are here to ensure your family enjoys every moment of the season while staying safe and healthy.
1. Sun Safety: Beyond the First Application
We all know the importance of sunscreen, but in the rush of the first beach or pool day, it’s easy to overlook the details.
Apply Early: Apply sunscreen at least 15–20 minutes before heading outside to ensure it absorbs properly.
Reapply Often: Especially for children, “once and done” isn’t enough. Set an alarm on your phone for every two hours.
The “Check”: Don’t forget the easy-to-miss spots: the ears, the back of the neck, and the tops of the feet.
2. Hydration and Heat Awareness
As we transition from cool spring days to the humidity of June, our bodies—especially those of young children and older adults—need extra support to stay hydrated.
Recognize the Signs: Early signs of dehydration include dry mouth, reduced energy, and darker-than-normal urine.
The Water Goal: Encourage water as the primary beverage. If you are heading out for a day of activities, pack more water than you think you’ll need.
3. Vacation Preparedness
Many of our families are planning trips this month. Whether you are heading to the coast or exploring local hiking trails, a little preparation goes a long way:
Travel Kits: If you are traveling with young children, keep a small bag stocked with the basics: a digital thermometer, age-appropriate fever reducers, and plenty of band-aids.
Reviewing Records: If you are traveling out of state, ensure you have easy digital access to your family’s immunization records and our contact information in case of a medical question while you’re away.
4. Summertime Sports & Play
With kids out of school and adults taking advantage of the long daylight hours, our Sports Medicine team sees a natural increase in activity-related inquiries.
If you or your children are starting a new sport or an intense summer training program, remember: gradual progression is key. Jumping into high-impact activities after a sedentary winter is the fastest way to invite an injury. If you feel any lingering joint or muscle pain, don’t wait for it to worsen—stop by our clinic for a non-surgical evaluation.
